We are delighted that second chance appeals have come into effect which allows people to appeal to the Court of Appeal where they have previously exhausted their right to appeal conviction. Exhaustion can occur where leave to appeal has not been granted or the appeal has been dismissed. The Court of Appeal may grant leave to appeal if it is satisfied that there is fresh and compelling evidence that should, in the interests of justice, be considered on an appeal.
This change in the law allows for more people to access the criminal justice system.
The fact that this is our legacy, having caused the change after pursuing justice for Faruk Orman, is a matter of great pride for our office.
