Alex Schwarcz

Solicitor

Alex Schwarcz completed a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts (Criminology and Journalism) from Deakin University in 2021. Whilst completing his studies, Alex worked as a research assistant to Paul Smallwood of Counsel and Andrew Sykes of Counsel. In particular, Alex worked for Mr. Smallwood during the Lawyer X proceedings, where Mr. Smallwood appeared for Faruk Orman, the first person to be acquitted as a result of the conduct of Victoria Police and Nicola Gobbo.

That case led to a fundamental change in the law in the State of Victoria, which now allows for all fresh evidence appeals to be facilitated through the Court of Appeal rather than through petitions for mercy via the office of the Attorney-General. Alex’s work on that matter, in assisting the lawyers with their research and administrative responsibilities, was critical to the case’s success.

After university, he worked as a trainee lawyer at Buchanan Law Firm while completing a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from The College of Law. He was admitted to practise law in November 2021.

He then worked as a solicitor at the Office of Public Prosecutions, where he was responsible for carriage of a range of prosecutions, including those under the Serious Offenders Act 2018.

In early 2023, he became Associate to the Honourable Justice Lasry, a pre-eminent jurist and former high profile criminal defence barrister who was pivotal in the anti-death penalty movement. Subsequently, Alex acted as Associate to Judicial Registrar Freeman in the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria, responsible for case managing the most serious criminal matters prosecuted by the State.

Having been familiar with, and worked with, our firm across five years, Alex joined Galbally Parker in 2024. He is interested in all aspects of the criminal law and is keen to work on both summary and indictable matters across the Magistrates’ Court, County Court, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

Away from work, Alex is an avid lifesaver. He is an active patroller at Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club and a member of Life Saving Victoria’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
